British Values Information

Fundamental British values underpin what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Great Britain. The aim of our core values is to celebrate our diversity and create an environment that is free from discrimination, intolerance and hate.

These values are not just exclusive to our nation as they are shared with other democratic countries as a way of creating a society where individuals from all backgrounds can feel safe and valued.

What are the 5 main British Values?

Democracy
Democracy is the foundation of the UK’s political system. This value ensures that everyone has equal say in how their country is run. This value is demonstrated through voting in election and referendums.

Rule of Law
Rule of law means that everyone in society is treated equally and fairly as everyone is following the same rules and laws with the same repercussions. This value promotes a sense of order and stability and helps prevent crimes and other harmful behaviours. This value is practiced in the UK justice system including laws, police and courts.

Individual liberty
Individual liberty is based on the premises that people should be free to make their own decisions and choices and allow people to pursue their goals and interests provided these do not break the law.

Mutual respect & Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs
This value is about understanding that we all don’t share the same beliefs and views. It is important to respect the values, ideas and beliefs of other people whilst not imposing your own on others, this creates a more inclusive and diverse society where people are more comfortable to be themselves without judgement or prejudice.
